Cork's Pink Auction 2010

OVER 300 REGISTERED FOR THE KINSALE PINK RIBBON WALK TO BENEFIT ACTION BREAST CANCER

The first Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk takes place in Kinsale on Sunday 4^th March 2012 at 2pm in aid of Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society.

As Brand Ambassador for the Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk, Cara O’Sullivan will lend her support on the day and will perform ‘Stand up and Fight’ to inspire walkers as they head off on the 10km route. There will be an earlier start time of 1.45pm for runners.

After the Walk, refreshments will be provided by the Kinsale Good Food Circle and jazz singer Sharon Crosbie, also a Brand Ambassador, will entertain everyone after the Walk, creating a party atmosphere in the Town Council Car Park on the Pier Road. It promises to be great day as every participant wears a Pink Ribbon Walk t-shirt and Kinsale shops and restaurants will ‘go pink’ for the weekend.

“We are delighted with the response from so many people and nearly all the Kinsale businesses to date. This is the first walk on the south coast and we are hoping to have 400 walkers on Sunday 4^th March raising €40,000 for The Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer,” said Jackie Dawson, Chairperson, Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk Committee.

The Pink Ribbon Walk is a national fundraising initiative which organises sponsored charity walks in locations around the country in aid of Action Breast Cancer. The objective is to empower individuals and communities to increase breast cancer awareness, promote healthy living and raise funds for Action Breast Cancer through a fun and rewarding experience.

Since 2009, The Pink Ribbon Walks in Kells, Co Meath and Ballina/Killaloe, Co Clare have raised €400,000 for Action Breast Cancer. The Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk hopes to add significantly to this figure in 2012.

136 Cheerleaders with One Purpose - Raise 100,000 for Breast Cancer Charity

With The Pink Auction having met and exceeded its goals for Action Breast Cancer here in Ireland, we now turn our enthusiasm to help others reach their fundraising goals. After all, it's all going to worthy breast cancer charities, so take a moment and share a click to help!

About 136 former cheerleaders got together in the United States to do a dance routine to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an amazing breast cancer-focused organization. Each time someone views the video, United Healthcare will make a $.10 donation to the Komen organization. Their goal is to get a million hits, which will lead to $100K raised. Pink Auction raised €2,942.33 for Action Breast Cancer

On Sunday, the 10th of October, scores of people gathered from around Ireland to support and enjoy The Pink Auction. After months of preparations, it was time to admire the more than 230 beautifully-crafted handmade creative textile donations by very talented Irish donors and raise funds for Action Breast Cancer.

Along the way, and particularly at the Pink Auction itself and the drop-off day, we were fortunate to have volunteers who helped things go smoothly. For those wonderful people who helped us with special events, organizing, publicity, logistics, social media, blog posts, and all the pinkthings that came up, WE THANK YOU and will make every effort to pay tribute to your efforts in this wrap-up. Note: If a name is a link in this post is goes to either the person's website OR a photograph of their auction donation.

The day began at 8:30 a.m. when the set-up volunteers met to transport and display the donations in the Ballroom of Cork's Imperial Hotel. Cork-based fashion designer, Laura Eliason, led the display design with color groupings, which received praise all day from visitors. We were thrilled to see so many friendly faces find us to offer help in the morning hours and are so grateful to each of you! There were so many to help, a few of whom had cheered us on along the way, including: Carol O'Leary, Melissa Mullins, Emer Hewson, the ladies of Wilton Library Knit and Knatter, and many more dedicated volunteers. Suzanne McEndoo, Ph.D., Hook's Law blogger and physicist extraordinaire dedicated her skills to organizing the item lots and creating the PowerPoint slideshow with photos taken by co-chair Evin O'Keeffe.

All morning, the items were available to buy then at promptly 2:00 p.m. sales ended so we could prepare for the big auction. By the time the live auction began, a considerable number of creations were sold outright, but the enthusiasm and excitement were still there. The dedicated work of the cashiers, Tamzyn de Rohan-Truba and RoseMary O'Shea made it all possible. Helping with just about everything, including Pink blog posts and event-day bidder registration, was Mandi Jackson. Informing the auctioneer and Evin, who was running the slideshow from the front of the room, may seem like a simple task, but couple that with displaying specific items and modeling donations for promotional images and there are many reasons to appreciate Máire O'Sullivan.

Auctioneer Denis A. Barrett guided guests through the bidding and at the end of the day, every item went to a loving new home and €2,942.33 was raised for Action Breast Cancer.

Julie Anne Carleton, whose idea sparked this community-based campaign and phenomenal event, shared a few words at the end of the event, paying tribute to the hard work, amazing creative talents, and heartfelt generosity that made the Pink Auction possible. We were also honored to have a registered nurse present to speak on behalf of Action Breast Cancer.

We are also aware that for many people here who have lost loved ones to cancer, that it was sometimes hard work emotionally too - and we are especially grateful to you.

For those ladies here who are breast cancer survivors and have donated work, thank you for sharing your courage, beauty, and strength with us. I hope today is a day that everyone can celebrate you and your work.

We also remember those we have lost to breast cancer with great love. Today, we help to make sure that we can provide a brighter future for all those affected by breast cancer, now and in the future.

Final auction items are being catalogued and press coverage has been cheering us on in these last weeks of auction preparations. We still appreciate your involvement and there are ways you can help make this event a success. Here are a few that cost absolutely nothing!

• Print our invitation and hand it out around your town and to your friends.

• Write about our event in your blog, newspaper, community newsletter, Facebook wall, or Tweets. Download our Press Release PDF and promotional photos to get started.

• Attend the Pink Auction. Join us at the creative textiles event that will inspire and encourage us all to be creative, kind, and giving. October is a perfect time to start Christmas shopping too!

• Volunteer at the auction. Help is needed to direct people to the auction in the Imperial Hotel as well as answer questions guests may have. Contact us to find out what volunteer opportunities are available.

We are dotting our 'i's and crossing our 't's with the Pink Auction just about three weeks away. Now that the plans are finalized, we are sharing the event day schedule with you so you know what to expect and when to come. It is free to attend the Pink Auction.

Sunday, 10 October, 2010 at The Imperial Hotel, South Mall, Cork City Centre

10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Auction room open to the public for people to just wander in off the streets and browse. This is FREE but we would love if you showed your support by buying a pink ribbon or making a donation

3:00 p.m.

The Lord Mayor will arrive

3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The Pink Auction will take place.

Remember to wear your pink ribbon and bring money to make a purchase. If you don't have a pink ribbon already, don't worry they will be available for sale at the event.

* The schedule is different for volunteers so please let us know if you want to help on the day and we will inform you of your time table.

Pink Auction 2010 is a live auction of creative textiles in aid of Action Breast Cancer, part of the Irish Cancer society.

Yesterday, Lisa Fitzpatrick took a moment of her time to model one of the many beautiful Pink Auction donations. She was in Cork helping Brown Thomas lead a style workshop in conjunction with the arrival of the Bastyan line at their Patrick's Street location.

In this photo, Ms. Fitzpatrick shows us that lacy doesn't have to be dressy. She paired a lace mini shawl knitted by Suzanne McEndoo with a classic black peacoat-style blazer and satin black top. Join us on Saturday, the 28th of August from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. outside Cafe Gusto on Lapps Quay for a public crafting event.

Any creative textile project you can do on your lap is welcome. We will be collecting for Action Breast Cancer while raising awareness of creative textiles as an art. Auction Item Spotlight: Suzanne's Pink Socks

I started working on these in Cork while studying, so they've been fully immersed in physics, but they also have a playful side. The colour of these socks reminds me of old fruit salad sweets from the corner shop, yum!

The pattern is Angee by Cookie A (found in her excellent book, Sock Innovation) and the yarn is Trekking [from Vibes & Scribes on Lavitt's Quay].

The simple stitch pattern looks a little geeky straight off the needles, but blocked and on a foot (or arm like the photo), it blossoms into the life of the party.

Hello, everyone! We have only three months left until the Pink Auction. We know you'd love to help fight to find a cure for and alleviate the stress felt by those battling Breast Cancer.

We will having a drop-in day in Vibes & Scribes when people can drop in their work, chat with others who have donated work, and enjoy a cup of tea. Date and details available soon.

The closing date for donations is the 10th of September in order to give us time to create the auction catalogue.

Consider your plans for the 10th of October. We would LOVE more volunteers for the day itself.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Please offer to help by telling us what role you would like to do out of the following options:

• Help prepare the room and help display work on the day of the Pink Auction (10-10-10)

• Lend your creative skills to art demos and knit events we're holding around Cork City

• Print and hand out flyers to your local knitting group, library, and yarn shops

• Sell pink ribbons

If you can't commit to help on a specific day, here are ways you can help on your own time, in your own community:

The Pink Auction would love for you to become involved! Here are a few of the ways you can make a difference:

Do you knit, sew, design textiles, crochet, dye wool, weave, or create fibre art?

Auction items will be your beautifully crafted donations of high-quality, sellable textile art. This can be: Crochet; Knitting; Lace; Weaving; Quilting; Felting; Batik. We welcome creative textile donations in a range of creations, including: Fashion; Creative textile jewelry; Quilts; Blankets; Shawls; Bags; Wall hangings; Mittens; etc... Donation Guidelines

Are you a member or leader of a community group?

Community groups are wonderful forums to create a collaborative project for the auction. Blankets, baby sets, or quilts are wonderful for groups to make together and donate.

Do you own a wool or fabric shop - or have clean wool/fabric to donate?

We're seeking donations of fibre materials, such as wool, yarn, fabric, thread, felt, and fabric dye for asylum seekers and our volunteers to create auction items. It may not seem like much, but even a skein or two of wool or a meter of fabric can be made into something beautiful. We have volunteers with skill and dedication, now we just need to give them something to work with.

Are you a publican or restauranteur?

You could host a workshop or publicity event to promote awareness. It doesn't have to be big to make a big difference.

Are you on Facebook, Twitter, or Ravelry?

You don't need to create or donate to help us spread the word about The Pink Auction in Cork City. Look for us on Facebook, Twitter, and Ravelry and tell your friends!

Our Knit In Public Event

On Monday, the 14th of June, we will be knitting in Fitzgerald Park (Cork City) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., even later if people want to stick around. Please come along, stay as long or as short as you want. We encourage all to bring friends, family, children, and pets.

Look for us down by the roses. We'll have balloons so you should spot us we will give info on Action Breast Cancer and on the Pink Auction. It free. It's fun. Hopefully, it will be sunny. There is no rain date for this event, if the weather is very bad it won't take place.

This coming October, we are holding the first ever Pink Auction in Cork City. The auction will bring together many people with two goals ---- to promote creative textiles in Ireland and to raise money for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society. People within the community as well as around the country are participating by making and donating handcrafted creative textile items to be auctioned off. The event will take place at The Imperial Hotel on Sunday, the 10^th of October, 2010.

You can help us in getting the word out to the public and this is a vital component to the success of the auction, both in soliciting donations and encouraging people to come and bid on auction items. The more people that hear about the Pink Auction the better so please share this or the links to your websites. The more support we can get the more we can do and the better it is for breast cancer awareness. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, read our Volunteer Request blog post.

The Pink Auction seeks donations of high quality textile art. Creative textile art includes: crochet, knitting, lace, quilting, weaving, felting, batik, textile jewellery. Donations may be in any colour and we actively seek handcrafted blankets, shawls, bags, fashion, baby clothing, mittens, etc… As the auction event approaches, smaller events and workshops will be taking place in the city. We anticipate community involvement as we promote creative textiles while encouraging donations. Local venues can help by hosting small workshops between now and early September or displaying auction items to spread the excitement for the event. Stores and craft groups can help by donating wool or textile supplies for pre-auction workshops or to be used in auction items.

With just over four months until the first ever Pink Auction, we are gearing up to start receiving donations of creative textiles. For each auction item donated, the donor needs to submit a completed donation form so the auction organizers know just how special your creation is!

We love it when you keep in touch with us while you're working on the donation so drop us a note and if you include a photo or link to your blog post about the project, we'll feature it in an upcoming Pink Cork blog post!

For now, you can download two PDFs - One with the DONATION FORM to complete for each item you donate to the Pink Auction and the other PDF is a list of SUGGESTED DONATION ITEMS. Both are in this post as images for you to preview and linked to in both forms on our blog's MEDIA page.

Pink Committee Meeting

The casual committee will be talking about international knitting day as well as plans for our stall at the Innishannon Vintage Rally. At the moment we are asking for donations of work, in any creative textile media or any colour. We have rules and guidelines on the Ravelry group page, but the only strict rules we have are:

• No offensive words/language or images used in the piece. This includes but is not limited to slang words for breasts.

• We recommend that group work should be planned before it is started. The most popular of group projects is to make a blanket. This can include: baby blankets, bed blankets, wall hangings,...

Ideally, we want to do raise as much money for Action Breast Cancer as possible, but also promote creative textiles and their importance.

In May, our donation form will be available in the Media page of this blog.

Our very first post in our very new blog is to tell you what this is all about. The Pink Auction is a creative textile auction to raise funds for and awareness of Action Breast Cancer, a part of the Irish Cancer Society. The auction will be held in October 2010 in Cork City, Ireland.

Pink Auction 2010 seeks donations of high-quality, sellable textile art, including but not limited to: Crochet; Knitting; Lace; Weaving; Quilting; Felting; Batik. This can come in the form of: Fashion; Creative textile jewelry; Quilts; Blankets; Shawls; Bags; Wall hangings; Mittens.

Get Involved! It doesn't matter if you are a student in secondary school, a fashion designer, or a hobby artist, your generosity makes a difference! Here are some of the ways you can help make this event a success:

• Sew, knit, quilt, crochet, macramé, or create a creative textile piece to donate to the auction.

• Plan a ‘Make-A-Square’ event in your school, community or group of friends. These one-off events will be held all over Cork through August, giving friends and community groups a chance to knit, crochet, felt, quilt, or even silk paint or batik a square that will be part of a larger auction item.

• If you have a café, pub, restaurant, or public space offer to host a ‘Make-A-Square’ event.

• Donate clean unused yarn or fabric to be used by fibre artists to make an auction item.

• Spread the word!
